The Art Club of Champaign turned 125 in 2001, an anniversary marked by the club with a celebratory dinner.

The Art Club of Champaign was one of the first women's clubs in Illinois. While visiting Dubuque, Iowa, Mary Healy observed the thriving women's club scene. Upon her return to Champaign, she attended the new Art Gallery at the University of Illinois with several friends. There, they informally organized the Art Club of Champaign on October 30, 1876.

The Club’s original purpose was to “…advance the knowledge of and the love of Art and Literature and to promote the Art of Conversation.” Every year the Club would examine an era of art or focus on a subject of art history. Members prepared papers, and guest speakers were invited to discuss various topics. Although formed in 1876, it was not until 1881 that the Club began formally recording its meetings.

During World War II, the Club worked with the USO to provide a Christmas party at Chanute Air Force Base for hospitalized soldiers. In 1976, the Art Club celebrated its 100th anniversary, receiving congratulations from President Gerald Ford and his wife, Elizabeth. Learn more about the Art Club in this blog post from the CCHA.
