Women of the Carley Friendship Club and their children gather at a meeting in 1925.

Carley Friendship Club was founded by a small group of women on July 11, 1924, at Carley Chapel Methodist Church in Somer Township. They met monthly to “promote sociability and advancement of educational interest in the homes.” Topics of interest to the Club included Illinois history, recent news articles, music, demonstrations, and poetry. The women also hosted baby and wedding showers for its members, as well as holiday parties and an annual banquet and picnic.

The Carley Friendship Club conducted charitable work within their community, providing gift baskets to families, donating to the Community Workers’ Club at Christmas, and collecting money, food, and clothing for the poor. The Club continued to meet until October 25, 1984, when it held its final meeting.
