Tiernan’s Block, 115 W. Main St., the first official location of The Urbana Free Library. The library was on the second floor from 1872-1876. The building was remodeled by Joseph Royer in 1913.

George McKinley Bennett (1863-1955) was key member and organizer of the Urbana Association of Commerce. In 1907, this association pushed for the construction of a new library building in Urbana, which ultimately became the Samuel T. Busey Memorial Library.
