November 17, 2013 tornado trail created by the National Weather Service in Lincoln, Illinois.

Although rare, only 3 percent of all tornadoes recorded from 1950 to 2010 occurred in November; the fall can bring tornado weather as well. On November 17, 2013, sixteen tornadoes were reported throughout the state, three of them occurring in Champaign County. Gifford was the hardest hit with an EF3 tornado packing peak winds of 140 mph. In a town with a population just shy of 1,000, the storm damaged 200 homes and impacted roughly two-thirds of the village. Tornados also touched down in Flatville and Broadlands. Luckily no one was seriously injured in the Sunday afternoon storms.
