Until 1971, it was illegal in Champaign and Urbana to wear clothing \"properly belonging to the opposite sex\" in any public place<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW234472382 BCX4\">.<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW234472382 BCX4\"> Public discrimination <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW234472382 BCX4\">such as this <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW234472382 BCX4\">led<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW234472382 BCX4\"> LGBTQ people to foster their own spaces, often in private and discreet locations. With the national momentum of the gay liberation movement in 1969, the gay and broadening LGBTQ community in Champaign County fought against discriminatory laws and for legal protections. By 1977, the cities of Champaign and Urbana held two of the earliest Human Rights Ordinances in Illinois, and some of the earliest, strongest, and most comprehensive in the United States. Since 1974, <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW234472382 BCX4\">numerous<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW234472382 BCX4\"> openly gay and LGBTQ businesses and organizations have opened, flourished, and fostered fun and community in Champaign County.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW234472382 BCX4\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span xml:lang=\"en-us\" lang=\"en-us\" class=\"TextRun SCXW52723129 BCX4\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW52723129 BCX4\"><em>LGBTQ Spaces in Champaign County<\/em> features a select number of private and public spaces <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW52723129 BCX4\">where<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW52723129 BCX4\"> LGBTQ people have met <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW52723129 BCX4\">in Champaign County, as well as outlining the trajectory from criminalization to legal protections <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun AdvancedProofingIssueV2Themed SCXW52723129 BCX4\">on the basis of<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW52723129 BCX4\"> sexual orientation, gender identity, and choice of clothing in the cities of Champaign and Urbana.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"EOP SCXW52723129 BCX4\"> The exhibit showcases photographs and ephemera of The Balloon Saloon and theBar from the 1970s-1980s, thanks to the assistance provided by DJ Doug Barnes.<\/span><\/p>","credits":"Adam Beaty","featured":0,"public":1,"theme":"","theme_options":null,"slug":"lgbtq-spaces-in-champaign","added":"2024-03-18 12:50:19","modified":"2024-05-03 12:19:16","owner_id":56286,"use_summary_page":1,"cover_image_file_id":878,"id":14},"item":{"item_type_id":6,"collection_id":19,"featured":0,"public":1,"added":"2024-03-15 12:22:03","modified":"2024-05-03 12:34:48","owner_id":56286,"id":738}}
